FAQs for Lifters

How do I know which session or flight I am competing in at The Gravity Games?

Check the flight schedule, and make sure you plan ahead of time to ensure that you make it in time for the equipment check and weigh-ins portion of your session.

Do I have to compete in the weight class that I signed up for when I registered for The Gravity Games?

No. At local competitions, you are allowed to compete in the weight class you fall under based on your weigh-in on the day of competition. 

For example, if you signed up for the 93kg class, but you weighed in at 95kg on the day of competition, you will be allowed to compete in the 105kg class. Similarly, if you signed up for the 93kg class, but you weighed in at 82kg on the day of competition, you will be allowed to compete in the 83kg class. 

Note that the above is also true for Provincials. However, for Regionals, Nationals and international competitions, you must make weight on the day. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to compete.

How does a powerlifting competition run?

There will be 2 sessions, a morning session and an afternoon session. Each session will include 2 flights, flight A and flight B. Flight A will complete all three squat attempts before Flight B begins. Following the completion of squats, there will be a 10-minute intermission, after which the bench press segment will commence. Flight A will complete their three bench press attempts followed by Flight B. Similarly, after the bench press, there will be another 10-minute break, followed by the deadlift segment, which will run the same way.

The lifting order for each attempt is determined by the weight being lifted, progressing from the lightest to the heaviest. Your lifting order may vary for each attempt. For example, do not presume that if you followed Robin Lifter in your first squat, you will follow them in subsequent squats.

Once the head referee announces that the bar is loaded, you may approach the platform to perform your lift. You have a 60-second window to complete your lift. After completing your lift, you have another 60 seconds to submit your next attempt to the score table. Attempt cards, where you indicate your next attempt, will be provided to you during weigh-ins. 

In the event of a failed lift, you may repeat the same weight for your next attempt as lowering the weight is not permitted. However, you may choose to increase the weight for your next attempts, even after a failed lift. All weight selections must be made in increments of 2.5kg (e.g., 100kg, 102.5kg, 105kg, etc.). Failure to submit your next attempt to the score table within the allotted 60 seconds, after successfully completing a lift, will result in an automatic increase of 2.5kg for your next attempt.

If you plan on breaking a provincial or a national record, you may “chip” the record by a multiple of 0.5kg. For example, if the provincial record is 100kg, you are allowed to attempt 100.5kg, 101kg, 101.5kg, or any multiple of 0.5kg on top of the existing record.

Your total score at the conclusion of the meet is determined by the highest weight successfully lifted across the three attempts for each lift. If you fail to complete all three attempts for a particular lift (e.g., squats), you will be technically disqualified. However, you are still permitted to complete the remaining lifts, although no total will be registered. Most lifters typically open with a weight they know they can handle comfortably to secure a total.
